At Avatar Imaging, we are dedicated to your skin health and the early detection of skin cancer. Our total body scans go beyond traditional skin check-ups to provide a thorough assessment of your overall well-being.

Our 3D Skin Scanner, featuring the advanced Vectra WB360 machine, is a state-of-the-art solution designed to conduct total body skin cancer checks and provide you with peace of mind.

Knowing and understanding your skin cancer risk factors, such as previous skin conditions, family history, and the presence of any unusual skin lesions, is crucial. With its advanced technology and comprehensive full-body photography, our 3D Skin Scanner identifies potential concerns, locates most skin cancers and suspicious lesions, and helps you to monitor them over time, ensuring the earliest possible detection and the best chance for successful treatment.

The 3D Vectra Scan, with the Vectra WB360, is the most advanced total body imaging system to date.

It is a useful tool for tracking changes in moles over time by creating a high-resolution 3D avatar of your body that records every visible spot on the skin. The 3D render of your body has multiple analysis capabilities. By tracking changes in your skin over time, this cutting edge technology facilitates the early identification of potential skin cancer. When detected early, it is easier to treat.

Our full-body mapping scan is a tool for the early detection of most skin cancers. It uses the Vectra WB360 machine that captures 92 pictures in 3 seconds to render a 3D avatar of your body. This 3D body image scanner allows medical professionals to examine your skin from different angles and zoom in on moles.

3D body imaging scans compared at regular intervals help to track changes in your skin, evaluate the effectiveness of skincare treatments and identify signs of skin cancer, including early melanoma detection, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Changes to look out for include the appearance of new moles or changes in the size, shape, or colour of existing moles. Your chances of surviving melanoma and other types of skin cancers are determined by how deep it has grown, using a measurement called the Breslow Thickness. The Vectra Skin Cancer Scan helps with early detection by highlighting spots on the skin and applying filters to identify lesions that may differ from normal tissue. This information allows Avatar Imaging to accurately assess whether a lesion is likely to be a melanoma, providing valuable insights for diagnosis and treatment. Vectra’s computer analysis helps healthcare providers compare changes in your moles over time to determine whether you have any developing skin cancer.

The Total Body Scan should be used as a complementary skin check to routine clinical examination. It’s important to remember that only qualified medical professionals can make a definitive diagnosis of skin cancer. With this information, your skin cancer doctor can give you a accurate diagnosis and avoid unnecessary biopsies.

Our advanced, whole-body photography service is not limited to those with pre-existing skin conditions. In fact, it’s an invaluable tool for proactive, healthy people looking to safeguard their skin and catch any developing cancer. These total-body scans are adept at early skin cancer detection, giving you the best chance for successful treatment.

Want more focused skin checks?

Our Full Body DermoScan is a thorough skin check with a dermatoscope that magnifies each lesion, enabling our practitioners to identify specific patterns commonly found in skin cancers and melanomas. This detailed analysis provides valuable insights for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Like all methods of skin examination, 3D skin imaging technology has limitations. The Total Body Skin Scan may miss hidden sites where melanoma can occur, such as the scalp or genital area. Sometimes melanoma in its earliest stages can resemble benign skin spots and be missed during a total body examination. On the other hand, a harmless spot may be identified as concerning, leading to unnecessary testing and worry. However, Avatar Imaging’s 3D Scan goes hand-in-hand with our Dermoscan technology, which can view these hidden sites with greater accuracy. Therefore, offering you a comprehensive understanding of your skin health.

If you have a seizure disorder or are very sensitive to flashing lights, speak with your healthcare provider before undergoing the 3D Skin Scan. Your doctor can help determine whether it’s safe for you to undergo the 3D body image scanner for a skin cancer check or suggest an alternative method.

To prepare for your full-body scan for cancer and to ensure clear and helpful images, we encourage you to:

  1. Avoid laser hair removal for at least one month before your session, as it can create artefacts and interfere with the accuracy of the scan.
  2. Refrain from using fake tan for 2-4 weeks prior to your session, as it can affect the colour and pigment of the skin, potentially hindering the accuracy of the scan. Make sure your skin is clean on the day of your session to eliminate any substances or residues that may interfere with the scan. We also recommend removing any nail polish for the same reason.
  3. Avoid applying makeup or cream to your skin on the day of your session, as they can create a barrier on the skin’s surface and affect the outcome of the scan.
  4. Wear appropriate underwear during the session to ensure your comfort and to maximise the skin area recorded.

When you arrive at our skin cancer clinic, you will first be greeted by our staff, who will show you to your designated room. Here, you will find a disposable bathrobe, underwear, and slippers provided for your use. We will ask you to remove all your clothing, including your face mask, makeup, jewellery, and anything else that covers your skin.

You will also be requested to move your hair away from your neck, face, and ears. If needed, we will provide you with a disposable hair band or cap. While we recommend getting fully undressed under the bathrobe for optimal scanning, it’s completely all right if you’re not comfortable with that. We prioritise your comfort and safety during the examination, and we will accommodate your preferences to ensure maximum comfort.

You can choose to get fully undressed, wear the disposable underwear provided, or wear your own underwear. There will be a wardrobe available in your exam room where you can safely store your belongings. Our aim is to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for your 3D Skin Scan. If you have any specific concerns or requirements, please let our staff know and we will do our best to accommodate them.

Once you are ready, you will step into the 3D Skin Scanner, which will take a 3D image of your entire body. This part of the process only takes 3 seconds, and once it’s over, you are free to re-dress.

A 3D body imaging skin scan provides a comprehensive and highly detailed assessment of your skin, enabling the early detection of changes that might not be apparent in a traditional visual full skin check.

As it stands, our 3D Total Body Photography system, recognised for its excellence in melanoma imaging, is currently only available at our Toorak location in Melbourne. This advanced technology provides comprehensive imaging of the entire exposed skin surface, allowing for precise monitoring and early detection of skin cancer. In the future, we are committed to expanding this service and launching additional locations throughout Australia, ensuring that Australians everywhere have access to cutting-edge tools to improve early detection of skin cancer, ultimately improving health outcomes nationwide.
